Bio: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Mücklich

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Mücklich has been Head of the Institute for Functional Materials at
Saarland University in Saarbrücken since 1995 as well as the Founding Director of the Material
Engineering Centre Saarland (MECS, www.mec-s.de). Since 2022, he has also been the official
Spokesperson of the German Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech, for the field of
Materials Science and Engineering. He is also a Fellow of the American Society for Materials
(ASM) and he has served as President of the German Society for Materials (DGM)
His main research areas are: (1) New surface functionalization by Direct Laser Interference
Patterning, and (2) Micro-, nano- and atomic-scale microstructural research, including the use
of tomographic methods and artificial intelligence.


Frank Mücklich is the editor of the monthly international journal ‘Practical Metallography –
Preparation, Imaging and Analysis of Microstructures’ (De Gruyter Publisher). He has
published over 500 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 17,000 times. He
has supervised more than 60 young scientists to their doctoral degrees. He has received more
than 20 national and international awards for his scientific work, including some of the highest
awards for his lifetime achievements, such as the Henry Clifton Sorby Award (ASM) and the
Emil Heyn Medal (DGM).
